NON-VECTORS

Information About Non-Vectors

The Orange County Vector Control District is frequently asked to assist a resident with a problem caused by a non-vector pest.  We limit our activities to those species determined to be vectors by the California Health and Safety Code.  OCVCD currently has control programs for mosquitoes, rats and fire ants.  Our staff is not trained or equipped to perform control activities on non-vector pests like Africanized honey bees, opossums, gophers and raccoons.  However, we do have an extensive collection of information sheets on these and other pests available on our web site.

There are “Pest Bulletins” covering everything from the materials Orange County Vector Control District uses for mosquito control to techniques on trapping rats.  The bulletins have information on the biology of the pest and other interesting facts.  Many of them contain suggestions for both exclusion and control of various non- vectors that can be performed by the homeowner.  Often times the best control method is to eliminate conditions that attract the pests.   This strategy is our first step in controlling vectors, and it works well with nearly all pests.  When professional assistance is recommended, the “Pest Bulletins” will advise the resident to do so.   Several “Pest Bulletins” are available in Spanish and Vietnamese.
